Lookout Ranch SOLD CALL FOR ANOTHER ONE! Click here for Map to the Lookout Ranch Vast meadows, stands of timber along a beautiful lake, and waterfowl filled native marshes combine with the crop and cattle lands to make the Lookout Ranch a productive and scenic ranch. The 6,680 acre Lookout Ranch is located just to the west of the small town of Lookout in Big Valley, Modoc County, CA. The towns of McArthur and Fall River Mills are located about 30 minutes to the west. The Lookout Ranch contains approximately 6,680 acres. The ranch also has an adjoining private land grazing lease of approximately 12,000 acre that runs about 275 AU from approximately April to November each year. Currently running about 300 AU, the ranch also grows the famous Fall River Wild Rice, alfalfa/grass and grain hay. In the fall the cattle graze on sub-irrigated meadows and the scattered timber in the rangeland. The ranch could easily expand the carrying capacity up to 1,000 AU. The Lookout Ranch is a renowned waterfowl-hunting ranch enhanced by a wetland area designed by the California Waterfowl Association. Rocky Mountain Mule Deer and antelope range on the ranch, as well as California Valley Quail and dove. There is a beautiful 80 acre lake, Taylor Reservoir, with great fishing. The ranch has a Private Lands Wildlife Management Program in effect operated under the California AB 580 program. Currently the ranch has a wildlife enhancement program that enables the ranch is purchase a minimum (we could order additional tags) of 6-buck deer tags for an extended deer-hunting season from August 15 through November 30 each year. This ability to hunt late season mule deer and improve ranch habitat could produce outstanding mule deer bucks. The ranch also has the ability to increase the number of tags they request each year. In 2003 the ranch received it's first Antelope tag! Additional tags should be available as herd numbers increase. Waterfowl hunting for both ducks and geese is simply outstanding. The ranch has many 3 man pit blinds located in the wild rice fields and marsh areas as well as stand up blinds in the native marsh. Willow plantings are being placed that will provide pheasant and deer habitat. The nearby area has wild pheasants and a stocking program could be very successful. For the 2003-2004 waterfowl season the ranch opened a small 10 member plus 10 guests waterfowl hunting club on a portion of the ranch. The Lookout Ranch headquarters has a two story manager's home, a shop, an equipment/hay shed, and a large feed mill that is currently used for hay storage. The ranch is fenced and a set of corrals, which includes livestock scales and a covered working area, is located at the headquarters. The meadow at the north end of the ranch has a newly remodeled 3 bedroom 2 bath cabin and small barn that is situated on a separate 1 ½ acre parcel. The cabin is situated on the edge of the ranchs 1,400-acre meadow and is perfect for watching the waterfowl and wildlife work the meadow. Each year a pair of bald eagles nest alongside the meadow and raise their eaglets; the cabin is situated for a great view For an appointment to see this property, please call Bill Wright 530-221-8100 or email The above information was obtained from sources deemed reliable, but Shasta Land Services, Inc. does not assume responsibility for its accuracy or completeness. The marsh is within the WRP project. In 2002 with the help of California Waterfowl Association biologists, the ranch completely restored about 800 acres to a beautiful wetland; swales, marsh areas, islands, ponds. Of course there are several pit blinds with many more planned! | |
